NEC single chip Blu-ray solution revealed

NEC has unveiled its' new LSI for use in Blu-ray devices, the EMMA 3PF. This new package is an industry first, providing all of the required Blu-ray functionality within a single chip.

Armed with this new one chip solution, NEC plans to take-over 50% of the Blu-ray supplier market by 2011.

The new chip contains a multi-core CPU as well as an on-board GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), boasting some hefty processing power. The package size is 50% smaller compared to similar solutions, giving NEC yet another advantage over competitors. Samples of the new chip will be shipping this September.

With NEC offering a more compact, single chip design at a lower price,  they are bound to succeed in taking over the Blu-ray component market. That is, as long as another competitor does not come up with a similar solution, which is very possible. Either way, NEC has stated that they will be very aggressive on pricing, so it is likely that an NEC chip will be coming to a Blu-ray player near you.
