Napster filter starts this weekend!

Looper used our newssubmit to tell us:

Napster will install a filtering system by this weekend to block the distribution of hundreds of thousands of songs that are protected by copyright, the website's attorney told a judge Friday.

The revelation by Napster attorney David Boies came as US District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel convened a hearing on reissuing an injunction sought by the music industry to halt what some claim is massive pirating of music by the wildly popular free website.

Boies said Napster employees had been working around the clock for the last two-and-a-half weeks to develop the filters to that the website can determine when copyrighted music is being sent through its computers.

After an appeals court ruling last month reaffirmed that Napster violated copyrights, Boies said Napster officials concluded they "have to go out to police the system."

Hall, ordered by an appeals court to revise an injunction on halting copyright violations, said Friday's hearing was an effort to determine "not if (a new injunction is issued), but what an injunction should look like."
