Napster promises changes but users keep downloading

Napster said it would begin blocking users from copyrighted songs this weekend, although it was business as usual for millions of users downloading music on Sunday.

The number of songs that actually amounts to is unclear but Napster has said it is using a filter to take the names of artists and titles and screen out files that match.

For instance, it could block out a file that is named ''Elton John'' or ``Elton-Candle'' or Candle in the Wind.''

While Napster has said it has identified 1 million unauthorized files it will block, experts said that is likely to amount to just a couple of hundred songs and may render just a subtle change in the service.

The company faces an injunction at any time.

Napster's Web site carried a notice that said the screening was a complex process that will degrade operation of the service.

It's a token of goodwill to the recording industry, but what they're promising to do is extremely challenging,'' said Bruce Forest, vice president of media and entertainment for Sapient Corp.

Seems no one is impressed by the filters Napster used, but what if they were effective, who would use Napster then anyway !
