New Hi Definition decoder chip from ST Microelectronics

ST Microelectronics announced a new dual-video-stream high-definition (HD) decoder chip, the STi7200, intended for STBs (Set Top Boxes), digital video recorders (DVRs) and DVD players.

This highly integrated SoC (System-on-a-Chip) supports both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats, high-definition satellite and cable TV standards. Being produced in 65nm process technology, it is able to deliver lower power consumption and competitive pricing.

An interesting feature of this chip is the dual output that allow viewers to watch HD material on two TV sets, one channel in high definition and the other downscaled on-chip to standard definition.

The STi7200 is available and it is priced at $30 in high volume. More details on this chip can be read in the article published at Engineering Times.
