New blue DVD format in the pipeline

Here we go again! CNN.com reports that Toshiba and NEC said they are also planning a follow up technology of the DVD using a blue laser, that would cut costs but be incompatible with a format proposed by Sony and other industry giants.

We recently posted an article about Blu-Ray a new technology that should once replace the DVD and hopefully would also end the DVD war. Now it seems that also in the Blu-Ray era there will be competition between two formats:

She added that, while the format would be incompatible with the Blu-ray blue-laser DVD standard proposed earlier this year by Sony, Matsushita Electric Industrial Company and others, Toshiba was still developing Blu-ray technology and may support it in the future.

"As the first market (for blue-laser DVDs), our view is that it would be best to have compatibility with existing DVDs," she said.

"In the future, these two would not necessarily be competing standards," she added, suggesting that it was possible the Blu-ray format may eventually become the industry standard for blue lasers.

Lets hope one of the formats will win this before it enters the consumer market. Read the entire article here
