New low voltage optical sensor for portable DVD/CD systems

Sipex Introduces SP8036 Advanced Power Control Solution for New Low Voltage Portable DVD/CD Systems

Milpitas, California (October 10, 2006) (OTC: SIPX.PK), - Sipex Corporation today announces the SP8036 APC (Advanced Power Control) solution, a single ended optical power sensor designed for automatic laser power control in DVD and CD recorder applications. With fully integrated photo detectors, this device monitors the light sensitivity of the laser diode and converts the light to an output voltage. The SP8036 is designed to operate with the new low voltage DVD systems requiring 3.3V operation and has an integrated power save feature ideal for portable systems such as Notebooks and Portable Display Players.

The SP8036 operates at the same performance levels found in all our APC solutions such as wide bandwidth for greater than 16X operating speed and precise laser power control which reduces read and write errors. In addition, the SP8036 features a single-ended output with a 1.5V output swing and an external reference capability, allowing the device to be adaptable to a large number of Optical Pickup Head designs.

The SP8036 offers the following key features:

  • Dual wavelength capability: 650nm for DVD and 780nm for CD
  • 100 MHz Bandwidth at -3dB insures DVD write applications of 16x or greater
  • 10 mV Output Offset Voltage provides wide dynamic range of output signal
  • ± 6 dB External Gain Adjust allows precision sensitivity control and adaptability to large number of Optical Pickup Head designs
  • Small 3.5 X 3 mm, 8-pin OPLGA package
  • New Power-down mode offers power saving opportunity in the Pickup Head unit

Pricing and Availability
The SP8036 is available in 8-pin, OPLGA lead-free package compatible with JEDEC reflow cycle specifications for lead-free process. Pricing and technical information is available by contacting customersupport@sipex.com.
