New technologies to obtain higher capacities on hard discs

According to a news published at Art Technica, Toshiba announced a new type of hard disc magnetic read heads. This new technology should allow a much higher hard drive storage density from the current of 178.8Gb per square inch to 1TB or more.

The used technology is named Nanocontact Magnetic Resistance (NC-MR), a rather complicated thing in which, as described by Engadget, "an enormous difference in magnetoresistance is achieved when two magnetic materials are situated close together and connected by a contact point that narrows to around 1-nanometer."

I must confess that I have no idea what this means, but if also Hitachi and Seagate are working on this, this technology should be promising.
