Apple recently issued a warning, without specifically naming any companies, that its iTunes software isn't meant to be synchronized with "non-Apple digital media players," saying future iTunes updates may stop the program's capability to do so.
Even though Apple didn't directly call out any companies, the Cupertino-based company likely is referring to Palm, because its Pre smartphone recognized as an iPod when connected to iTunes.
The ability to sync a Pre to iTunes means users are able to transfer non-DRM music files and movies to the phone without Apple being able to do anything to stop it. It's not surprising that Apple only wants its products to be able to work with iTunes, let alone transfer non-DRM files onto a device.
"If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options," according to Palm spokesperson Lynn Fox. "They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider."
Although Pre owners would like their phone to continue to sync with iTunes, it's likely Apple will dabble around to block it from being recognized. However, it's possible legacy iPod support could be affected if Apple dabbles too much, as the Pre shows up as an iPod.
