Plextor explains SafeDisc 2 issue next week to us

One of the biggest issues on the site right now is the Plextor and SafeDisc2 story. Some people report that with a firmware upgrade Plextor drives don't backup with SafeDisc 2 protected games anymore. There are reports that if you downgrade the firmware the problem is solved, and you can again backup SafeDisc 2 protected games.

The hypothese is that Plextor has somekind of connection with Macrovision (producers of SafeDisc) and had to disable SafeDisc 2 support.

I mailed them for a reaction and today they reacted. The person that is able to explain the situation is on holiday right now, but will contact CD Freaks next week for an explanation. He cleary states in his mail that this has nothing to do with Plextor turning against their customers. So please keep visiting our site for the answer of Plextor.

Please keep in mind that Plextor is a company and therefor can't say everything the way we would. E.g. don't expect them to say; "yes our drives are able to copy SafeDisc 2 protected games", it would give them a bad name and/or Macrovision would sue them.

For those who are still intrested, these are things I've heared about what could be the problem: Because of a license disagreement, Plextor Europe can't use the software of Plextor USA, therefor they made their own flashtool, but the firmwares are totally identical ! You can open them with winzip, extract the ROM binaries and do a filecompare, they are 100% identical !

Stay tuned for more on this !
