Ricoh MP7200A with JustLink and JustSpeed

Ricoh brings us a new highspeed drive, this drive writes at 20 speed, rewrites 10 speed rewrite, and is able to read back your date at 40 speed. Ricoh has developed new technologies to make sure highspeed writing; JustLink and JustSpeed.

JustLink should provide protection against bufferunderuns

JustLink:

Buffer underrun errors caused by data transfer lag have been a constant problem with CD-RW drives. The JustLink system, independently developed by Ricoh, automatically prevents buffer underrun errors by predicting them before they happen. JustLink, first introduced with the Ricoh MP9120A drive, provides writing stability in the following situations where buffer underrun errors could occur easily with a conventional drive.

  • With high-speed writing.
  • When some other operation is being performed on the computer during writing.
  • When writing CD-RW drive from a CD-ROM drive.
  • When writing the data on the network directly.

And the also features JustSpeed (Optimum Writing Speed Control) making sure that your CD's will be written correctly.

JustSpeed:

During high-speed writing in the 16x to 20x speed range, the drive checks the type of disc in use and then adjusts the writing speed to an optimal level between 12x and 20x; It reduces disc errors such as insufficient power in writing and servo follow error.

The mechanism controls the maximum writing speed by

(1) using the ATIP information (maker name, model number, etc. pre-recorded on disc),

(2) performing test writing to the OPC area at the inner circumference of the disc, and

(3) getting the status of the servo follow check of the outer circumference of the disc (checking of track shift due to lack of precision in cutting of the disc itself).

A combination of the above (1), (2), and (3) enables better certainty in high-speed writing, while offering support to discs where maximum writing speed cannot be obtained from the ATIP information.

All with all, this drive seems to be a piece of modern technology and probably also brings us the future of highspeed burning. But if your computer can't handle the datastream to your burner, then who need's a faster burner anyway !
