Sanyo's blue laser ramps up HD writing speeds

A brief report on EngadgetHD describes a Sanyo announcement of a blue laser diode unit that has the ability to write at 6x to dual layer discs. Allegedly catering for both BluRay and HD-DVD formats, it is not very hard to see that a natural end-point of this component's integration would be a combined-format, PC-based writing device.

Unfortunately there is precious little technical detail about the development, and therefore it is difficult to verify these claims to any meaningful degree. I guess as consumers we should prepare ourselves for a series of rapid and competing 'commercial breakthroughs' from interested parties in the high definition recording formats. What is interesting is that the commercial concerns outside the declared 'alliances' are looking to history and apparently seeing the future a little more clearly. In appealing to consumers who don't really want to commit themselves yet to either of the 'official' HD optical recording formats, Sanyo could eventually win through where it matters - selling the boxes.
