Solid state disk drives from Ritek

After announcing to enter in the market of flash memory, according to an article published by SysOpt.com Ritek now announces that it's close to launch a 2.5-inch notebook-ready non-volatile Flash solid state disk (SSD) drive.

Because of the lack of moving parts and the low power consume, SSDs have as ideal target notebooks: no moving parts reduce heat production, and low power consume makes battery durability longer.

Initially Ritek's SSD drives will be available only in two formats, 16 GB and 32 GB capacity, not much for something that should take the place of traditional hard disk drives, but enough to allow the installation of an operating system. Another problem of this type of drives is speed, because Ritek's SSD drive supports up to PIO Mode-4, and up to Multiword DMA Mode-2.

Even if SSDs are not really fast and their limited capacity doesn't allow to store much data, we must consider that this technology is still in the beginning. Who knows... maybe future progresses in flash memory technology will make HDD obsolete...
