Sony BMG Music compensates its users

Sony has finally decided to compensate customers in California who were affected by the DRM software found on some Sony BMG music CD's.

Sony BMG has agreed to pay out up to $175 to each customer who can prove that the software found on these discs has damaged their computer in some way. The settlement also sees Sony having to pay £380,000 in damages and penalties to settle the case.

This has been a long running issue with Sony starting in November 2005. It was Mark Russinovich in 2005 that discovered that Sony BMG had been using virus-like techniques on some of its music CD's as anti-piracy techniques. This caused an outrage amoung many customers and is one of the main reasons that many people say they dislike Sony to this day.

The CD's were only sold in North America and its expected that more States will announce a settlement.
