Sony to double CD space

TOKYO -- Japanese electronics maker Sony Corp. said on Wednesday it will start providing licenses in September for its new compact disc format that has a storage capacity twice as big as conventional CDs.

Sony will cooperate with Dutch electronics group Philips Electronics NV in licensing the new CDs, enabling other firms to produce discs with the same format.

The plan reflects the growing popularity of CDs used to store data for personal computers on the back of surging global PC use, Sony said.

The format allows three types of CDs -- read-only, write-once and rewritable -- and will be able to prevent illegal copying, Sony said. It has a capacity of 1.3GB and is tentatively named Double Density CD-ROM/-R/-RW.
