Sony traces Napster users in New Zealand

MS traces illegal Windows users...and Sony traces Napster users....

Several thousand New Zealand music fans have been traced and put on file for using the internet service Napster to download music free of charge.

Sony Music managing director Michael Gladding says an industry body in London, the International Federation of Phonographic Industries, has developed software systems able to trace the internet addresses of people who use Napster.

He says in February there were 3,500 downloads of music by Bic Runga and about 1,500 for Dave Dobbyn and Stellar.

He says Sony will sit on the lists of addresses because it aims to deal with Napster, not people who use it, but he will not completely rule out the chance of prosecutions.

Another company in New Zealand, Warner Music, has sought similar information but has not so far received it.

Legal pressure overseas is being maintained on Napster, with big companies winning a latest court order requiring Napster to install filters to block copyrighted songs from its service.

Bic Runga, Dave Dobbyn and Stellar...Who the f*ck are that?? Anyway...why giving orders to trace users and then saying that you (Sony) are not going to use it...
