TDK to Launch Software for Building MPEG-4 Image Distribution

Binbag used our newssubmit to tell us that TDK is doing some fine things with MPEG-4.

This is what he wrote:

April 17, 2001 (TOKYO) -- TDK Corp. on May 7 plans to launch its "WanderStream" software package for distributing images in compliance with MPEG-4 system layers.

MPEG-4 is an international standard for animation compression. It sets the way of displaying objects, such as still images, animation, voice and text, in concert with "scene information," or information that determines the screen structure, to be delivered to the viewer. For example, it provides an ability to synchronize and synthesize two or more images and display them on the screen, or to combine text and image information for display. TDK established the new system through collaboration with Israeli Optibase Ltd. Optibase is a venture company pursuing development of MPEG-related technologies.

The package software consists of the following four components: (1) the WanderStream main server, (2) the WanderStream live server, (3) the WanderStream manager, and (4) the WanderStream player. The component (1) is for performing real-time coding and streaming of image data, and streaming of stored image data. The component (2) is for performing only real-time coding and streaming of image data; the manager (3) is server software to control the components (1) and (2); and the player (4) is client software for coding and synthesizing images. They do not only conform to the MPEG-4 system but also correspond to object-based coding and IP multicast.

Running the components (1) and (2) requires server machine equipped with a Pentium 4 processor operating on a 1.5GHz or higher clock. They work on Windows 2000 and Windows NT4.0. Main memory requirement is 128MB or more; and there should be 128MB or more free space on the hard disk drive. The component (4) needs a Windows PC using the Pentium III processor with the operating frequency of 500MHz or higher. Its main memory requirement is 128MB or more; and there should be 10MB or more free space on the hard disk drive.

The software product in the minimum configuration for distributing images is priced at 590,000 yen or more. Pricing for the high-end version, including development tools for distribution software and additional functions such as object distribution, is 3.61 million yen or more. (124.26 yen = US$1)

Not to bad at all... but I still have to see what it'll really bring us!
