They know everything...

BREIN, the Dutch anti-piracy organisation reports on their site about their results of the year 2000, and what we can expect from them for the year 2001, here's a short summary:

For them the year 2000 was a year with good results, but they are very worried about the big growth of people who copy CD's at home, and of the big influence of organized crime in software piracy. Using the internet pirates are able to stay anonymous, and to sell to the whole country and even worldwide.

Besides copying CD's, most people that sell CD-R's are also dealers that sell compliation CD's and DVD's that are made by criminal organistations. BREIN is currently investigating these organisations, they make compilations that are produced in foreign countries. BREIN reports that they did some serious injuries to this scene, but has not the capacity to stop them. They also state that they have the idea that they are not taken serious by other Dutch authorities. Also other countries are worried about the Dutch copyright control.

In the year 2000 they found 123 persons quilty, most of 'illegal homeburners'. They destroyed about 250.000 CD's, tapes and cassettes, and took 110 computers and CD-R drives. This year, BREIN wants to take more actions against internet pirates. (People who sell CD's from a website)

BREIN made shutdown about 1223 - mostly MP3 - sites, and last two months they were after 121 sites that offered pirated software for sale.

Also DivX worries them, both offered for download or supplied on a CD-R is illegale and therefor they are after people who supply those. Also Modchips (for Playstations) are on their list.

They also noticed that CB and TL have thought about their future and now offer DVD's. And they offer a large list of illegal CD's that they want to shorten this year.

Well the reports goes on and on, but will be mainly intresting to Dutch visitors, who can read it here.
