It seems more and more people really really want a Playstation... Many people see big bizz in this new hype...

Buying the coveted Sony PlayStation 2 video-game console as a last-minute Christmas gift just got a little harder.

Peel Region police are asking for the public's help to recover 354 of the electronic fun machines that were stolen last week.

...

The estimated value of the stolen consoles is $160,000. Police speculate the thieves will likely try to sell the machines, which retail for about $449, before Christmas.

PlayStation 2 consoles flew off shelves when they were released in October and are an incredibly popular item for Christmas this year.

The devices, which can play DVD movies, music CDs and PlayStation video games, are extremely difficult to find at stores, and an underground market has quickly sprung up on the Internet to accommodate the rabid demand.

On Thursday, one of the game systems was sold on one Internet auction site for $709.

More fraud...

Earlier this month, in Moncton, N.B., a 20-year-old was charged with fraud after police discovered two Web sites advertising almost 15,000 PlayStation 2 consoles available and ready to be delivered by Christmas.

In a similar incident two weeks ago, police in London, England, began investigating a company that claimed it had access to thousands of consoles.

Customers' cheques were cashed and their credit cards were charged, but the games were never delivered and now the phone numbers of both the company and its president have been disconnected, their offices have been closed and no one related to the company can be found.

Think before you buy!
