US Threatens Sanctions on Ukraine for piracy

The US government can't take it anymore: Ukraine has to stop the piracy or it will take trade sanctions.

The Bush administration on Tuesday threatened to impose trade sanctions against Ukraine unless the country makes a greater effort to control what American companies claim is widespread piracy of music, computer programs and other copyrighted material.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick announced that his office had begun an investigation into Ukraine's practices that could result in trade sanctions if the matter is not resolved over the next three months.

``Ukraine's exports of pirated compact discs are disrupting markets through the region and beyond,'' USTR said in a statement. ``This failure to protect intellectual property rights could jeopardize Ukraine's efforts to join the World Trade Organization and undermine its efforts to attract trade and investment.''

This is the first time I hear about sanctions against a country for his failure to go after illegal software and music. The US estimated that they exported between 60 and 80 million pirated compact discs over the past two years
