Ultra-thin OLED display prototypes from Sony

Last week visitors of an expo in Tokyo had the chance to see Sony's look on the future. The company showcased their newest OLED display prototype that's only 3mm thick. By showcasing the OLED technology, Sony tries to convince everybody of the technology's strengths. The ultra-thin display could easily show content at resolutions of 960x540 pixels on an 11-inch panel.

Besides the 11-inch version Sony showcased a 3.5-inch OLED, which had a QVGA resolution of 320x240 pixels. In the future we can expect these to be fitted in our mobile devices and take over the LCD market. OLED's super-thinness makes them use less power, which makes them interesting for many consumer devices. Besides being thin, OLEDs handle fast images better and have a better colour reproduction.

We've heard that many were enthusiastic about the new displays, but when OLEDs will reach a mainstream position and will be mass-produced, this can't be said.
