Update on the plextor rumours...

JimKiler and Plextorian both used our newssubmit to tell us about this article at CDR-labs:

A few days ago I reported about some plextor rumours. For example I said a new drive will come with 2 years of warranty. Well what is this:

This is directly related to the rumored "two year warranty" or guarantee or whatever. There is a law within the European Union that will force all peripheral manufacturers to provide a two year warranty as of January 1 of 2002. This will affect Plextor Europe only. You will not get a two year warranty for products sold by Plextor America or Japan.

If you want to know more about the three parts of plextor you should read our newsposting from almost a month ago. It explains how the company works.

So when is the new drive coming?

So what about Plextor's upcoming CD-RW drives? I didn't push Howard because I knew he wouldn't tell me and I respect the business practices of Plextor. Why would any company announce a product or let information slip on a product months and months before its due anyway? It would hurt the sales of their current drives and make them look bad if they didn't deliver in the time period originally announced. Instead Plextor's subsidiaries announce the drives about 30 days before they will be readily available in that region. When the press release goes out, you will have the real information. Not before. Howard did tell me that there probably will be a new drive in the third quarter of this year. Now that doesn't mean it will be in July. It could be in September and it could depend on region.

Howard also mentioned that later this year, Plextor America is planning on announcing a new drive for the portable user. Plextor will try to buck the trend that portable drives need to be slow by using an "enhanced interface." I'll let you guess what hot new interface they'll be using.

We also talked about DVD-ROM drives. There has been a lot of talk about a new DVD or combo drive from Plextor. He narrowed it down for me that there will be a DVD product from Plextor in the next year but please don't hold him or I to that promise. A year is a long time for things to change. What was interesting was his outlook on the current status of DVD drives. Many people look to Plextor for providing high speed DAE. Current DVD designs are made for watching DVD movies and not for extracting audio. Instead it seems that Plextor is putting a lot into MultiLevel Recording or ML technology that they are developing along with companies like TDK, Calimetrics and Sanyo. Why ML? They see ML as the way to go in the next 12 to 18 months. It has the highest storage rate (~2GB), highest transfer rate and the media is very cheap. You can't say that for the current status of DVD's. Using this technology Plextor feels they can deliver the same performance of their current drives along with a way to store large amounts of data or video affordably.

Well thanx cdrlabs for contacting plextor about this.
