A panel discussing content protection here at the DVD Entertainment 2000 conference delved heavily into the idea of watermarking DVD video. The panel feels that approach, along with the Content Scrambling System, will stop the piracy of DVD movies that is already occurring.

Watermarking is currently being used to protect DVD audio content from piracy and will eventually be added to DVD video. The process permanently marks each digital audio or video frame with noise that is supposedly undetectable by human ears or eyes. Only the playback equipment would be able to detect it.

Watermarks are woven through the entire stream of a movie in very minute pieces. In a one-second stream of video from the disc -- which has an average size of 5 Mbps -- ...
Because the watermark is a part of the video itself, removing it will damage the video image as well. So good luck finding it and good luck removing it.
