CES 2010: Samsung intros TicToc MP3 player

Samsung is using CES in Las Vegas as a platform to launch one of the few MP3 players aimed specifically for people younger than 14 years of age.

The MP3 player will ship with a 2GB or 4GB storage capacity, with color choices of blue, pink, or silver.  The TicToc includes 12 hours of battery life, and the MP3 player supports MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, and FLAC music files.

It has very slim dimensions of 17.5x17.5x35.99 mm, and can be re-charged using a charging cradle that ships from Samsung.

Interestingly, TicToc is controlled by a single button that determines operations depending on how it is being held.  When held horizontally, the TicToc button skips tracks.  When held vertically, the button is a volume control.  If shaken, the TicToc shuffles through songs.

Samsung didn't announce pricing or availability of the TicToc.

The South Korean electronics company has shown off several different MP3 players with extremely interesting designs and markets.  The MyFit MP3 player is for the athletes looking for something more out of the device; the Ice Touch has a transparent touch screen OLED display for the trendy tech enthusiasts; and the TicToc is for all of the spoiled tweens.

Apple iPods are extremely popular among middle school and high school students, so I'm not sure if the TicToc will be able to gain significant marketshare.  It will likely come down to Samsung's efforts of marketing the MP3 player to children under the age of 14 -- and at what price.
