iPhone 3GS is top rated smartphone

It may be extremely difficult to rank all of the smartphones available on the market today, but a recent article published by Consumer Reports indicates the popular Apple iPhone 3GS is the No. 1 smartphone at the moment.

The iPhone 3GS overpowered the RIM BlackBerry Storm and Palm Pre smartphones, in thanks to the latest iPhone's "superior display, reinforced by top-notch multimedia, navigation, Web browsing, and battery life," according to the report.

Despite these setbacks, however, the Pre, Storm, and other BlackBerry models outclassed the iPhone 3GS in messaging, while the Pre can multitask better than the other phones.

The top smartphones according to Consumer Reports:  iPhone 3GS, with a score of 73; iPhone 3G, 70; Samsung Omnia, 70; BlackBerry Storm 9530, T-Mobile G1, Samsung Epix and BlackBerry Bold, 69; BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Palm Pre, 67; and the LG Incite coming in last, 66.

Critics of the report say the iPhone 3GS was able to keep the top spot, in part, due to consumers already used to the iPhone and all of its features.  The iPhone 3GS has several key improvements, but in part, remains similar to the previous iPhones.  iPhone models have  been on the market for quite some time with impressive functionality, so I'm not surprised the 3GS led the way in the Consumer Reports study.

As owners continue to use their mobile phones for other tasks besides phone calls and text messaging, rankings must adapt and take all of these other features into consideration.  For example, the iPhone, supported by the growing App Store, has thousands of apps that obviously don't involve using the phone placing voice calls.

Despite it being the No. 1 smartphone, it has recently suffered security holes and possible overheating issues that has left some owners frustrated.

If you had to pick, which smartphone is most appealing to you?
