ZillionTV expands into the living room

ZillionTV will indefinitely be delayed until 2010, but the new service will launch for ISPs and is expected to become available directly to consumers.

The ZillionTV platform is a very interesting technology, especially considering viewers have the ability to modify their advertising preferences.  Since the service will be delayed until 2010, it was good to see the company expand its distribution strategy to help offer consumers more flexibility.

"We're also rapidly moving forward with efforts to embed the ZillionTV service in an assortment of consumer electronics devices as industry statistics point to embedded services as the future of video-on-demand," ZillionTV CEO Mitchell Berman said in a statement.

zilliontvUtilizing a partnership with several major Hollywood studios and credit card company Visa, viewers have the ability to view, rent or purchase ad-supported videos for free within the ZillionTV service.  There are now more than 60 content providers, with the service now available for closed market testing only.

Viewers must have a required set-top box and remote control, along with a broadband Internet connection faster than 3 MB/s.

With so much competition to offer TV viewers content in the living room, it will be interesting to see how ZillionTV tries to attract new users.  The service needs to be available for a fair price, and the set-top box and remote control cannot cost too much.  In addition, the content library  must also grow, with ZillionTV creating partnerships with content providers.
